Education Programmes

Since its inception, Nida Trust has delivered Teacher Education. Back in 2005, we were a group of Muslim teachers all working in the State Sector. We were all privileged to receive outstanding professional development and training funded by central government. However, we were aware that there were many schools in the charity and independent sectors that did not have access to these resources. Our Trust endeavoured to pass down this training to Black and Minority Ethnic Teachers pursuing a teaching career in all sectors.

The main aims of the Nida Trust Teacher Education Programmes are to:

1. Encourage more Muslims into the teaching profession – formally gaining Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

i. Ensures more ethnic minority teachers in the state school sector, as well as positive roll-modelling for ethnic minority pupils and a more cohesive society

ii. Provides an attractive career to ethnic minorities

iii. Leads to higher standards in Muslim Schools

2. Support, train and mentor Muslim teachers in School Leadership positions

i. Ensures more ethnic minority school leaders in all sectors

Over the last two years, Nida Trust have fulfilled these aims by delivering a number of ongoing programmes and initiatives

You Teach Programme

Organised to encourage and support young Muslims interested in joining the teaching profession, the You Teach programme promotes teaching as a career to young Muslim graduates, supports them in obtaining school placements and provides a safe sharing space for Muslim students to discuss experiences in teaching and education.

This year, more than 50 people took part in the programme and it has led to a number of people beginning teaching areers. You Teach seminars were held in community venues across London; including the North London Muslim Centre, City Academy (Hackney) and the Yunus Emre (Turkish cultural) Centre in Central London. The programme promotes every avenue into teaching; including Teach First, QTS Assessment Only, School Direct and the traditional University-based PGCE course. The programme helps students decide on the best option for them, then it mentors all students through the pplication process. Since 2011, Nida Trust has assisted over 200 people exploring a career in education.
